What Is Changing for Documents Going to Vietnam?
Historically, Vietnam was not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. As a result, obtaining authentication for a U.S. document intended for use in Vietnam could involve multiple levels of certification and legalization.
Vietnam deposited its instrument of accession to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents on December 31, 2025.
The Convention is scheduled to take effect for Vietnam on September 11, 2026.
Once applicable, qualifying public documents originating in the United States generally will be able to receive an Apostille Certificate from the appropriate U.S. competent authority for recognition in Vietnam, eliminating the traditional requirement for additional consular legalization under the Convention.

What Types of U.S. Documents May Need an Apostille for Vietnam?
